One Direction + Feminism

Directioners. That is the terminology used when referring to the One Direction fanbase. The fans, consisting of mainly females, are seen as crazy, obsessive, and irrational in the eyes of those who do not consider themselves Directioners.

Though the fans experience judgement, the boy band itself does too, with their hate being based off who their fans are. Countless times, One Direction has been dismissed as “untalented,” despite the fact that they’re the world’s most famous boy band and that their music is enjoyed by millions of listeners every single day. Not only have they accomplished that, they have also broken many musical records on Vevo and Billboard, even making it to the Guinness World Book, yet the boys are still told that they “don’t deserve all the fame they get,” because their female dominated “fan-base are a bunch of retards.”

Ultimately, the origin of all the unreasonable hatred ambushed at One Direction and Directioners, are the result of an underlying female-prejudiced mindset, which introduces the topic of feminism.

In an online forum entitled “Top Ten Worst Bands Ever,” One Direction was voted as the worst.

However, in the “Comments” section where voters justified their thoughts, the most frequently used so-called arguments were all along the lines of: “They make music only for those stupid teenage girls” and “Girls only like them because they are attractive.”

1, These commenters are dissing a band due to the fact that many girls favor them. This is extremely sexist because they are demoting females, implying that they are too unintelligent to understand true talent because of their gender.

2, The comments classify girls as being extremely shallow, through the false assumption that One Direction’s fans only like them for their good looks. If girls are only fond of One Direction for their appearances, they would be admiring photos of them, rather than spending valuable money to buy their music. These ignorant people are totally dismissing the fact that One Direction makes millions of dollars from selling their music. Adding to that, all of their albums and singles have been at the top of the iTunes charts, meaning that they were the most demanded and bought songs.

3. The fundamental misconception that each of the comments include, is that they believe that it is valid to declare being female as an insult. In other words, they are stating that because Directioners consist of mainly girls, One Direction must not be good musicians, even though, these two claims do not correlate with each other whatsoever. Girls choosing to support One Direction have no direct impact on the talent that the boy band have as singers.

One Direction and Directioners are symbols of gender inequality

This injustice is illustrated through the sexist comments thrown at them, displaying the necessity for feminism in our society. The world we live in today needs to apprehend that it’s okay to be a girl--females have every right to enjoy whatever they desire without being shamed for it.

It also ought to be taught that the opinions of a female are worth just as much as that of a male’s. When it comes down to it, men and women are all just the same human beings who are all equally as important. The only difference between the two sexes is the anatomy of the body, which in the world we live in today, determines our individual worth.

Women hold every right to be recognized as prominent members of society.

Women are entitled to social justice.
Women matter. -K
